Dental Cleanings (Prophylaxis):
At Kiss Dental, we believe that a healthy smile begins with a thorough dental cleaning and examination. Commonly referred to as Prophylaxis, this essential procedure is not just a routine check-up; it's a crucial step towards maintaining optimal oral health and preventing potential issues down the road.
What Does a Dental Cleaning Involve?
During your dental cleaning, our skilled hygienists employ specialized tools to ensure the efficient and safe removal of plaque and tartar from your gums and teeth. While regular brushing and flossing are fundamental components of oral care, they may not suffice to address hard-to-reach areas where plaque tends to accumulate.
The Cleaning Process
- Scaling: For dental cleanings, we typically use an ultrasonic cleaning tool. This device produces gentle vibrations on the teeth, aiding in the loosening of plaque. A stream of water is then applied to wash away the dislodged debris. For more stubborn build-up, our hygienists utilize a manual scraping tool, carefully removing deposits from the tooth surfaces and between them.
- Polishing: Once all plaque and tartar have been successfully eliminated, the next step is polishing. Our hygienists apply a special cleanser to a rotating instrument, gently scrubbing the tooth surfaces. After polishing, we floss between the teeth and may apply a fluoride solution to enhance enamel protection.
How Often Should You Get Your Teeth Cleaned?
Determining the frequency of professional teeth cleanings depends on various factors, including your dental and overall health. While the American Dental Association suggests a minimum of one professional cleaning per year, most dentists, including Kiss Dental, recommend scheduling appointments every six months.
For some individuals, especially those prone to gum disease, more frequent cleanings may be recommended. Your dentist and hygienist will provide personalized recommendations based on your unique dental needs.
